Family of labourer axed and burnt in Rajasthan demand attacker to be hanged in public

In a bone-chilling video, Afrazul Khan, a daily wage earner from West Bengal's Malda, is attacked and set afire by another man over alleged ‘love jihad’

Family members of a 47-year-old Mulsim man who was hacked and burnt to death in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand have demanded public execution of the accused, who was arrested by police on Thursday, December 7.

“I spoke to my son in the morning before he was killed. I don’t know the reason behind his murder. I have seen the video, guilty should be punished.” said the aggrieved mother of the victim.

“We want those who killed my husband so brutally and showed it to the world be hanged. I want Insaaf (justice). He was only killed because he was a Muslim. Yesterday, at around 3 pm, we received a call from Rajasthan Police and were told that my husband has been murdered,” said Gul Bahar Bibi, speaking to The Indian Express over the phone.

In a bone-chilling video, Mohammed Afrazul, a daily wage earner from West Bengal’s Malda, is attacked and set afire by another man over alleged ‘love jihad’, a term coined by rightwing groups who accuse Muslim men of drawing Hindu women.

In one of two clips posted online, the accused, Shambhu Lal, in a red shirt, white trousers and a white muffler, is seen leading Afrazul to a spot in the woods.

According to the police, Shambhulal asked Afrazul for directions. He then follows him and attacks him repeatedly with an axe. When the victim falls silent, Shambhu Lal looks into the camera and launches into a deranged hate speech, declaring that he killed him to save a woman from “love jihad”

The attacker who has been identified as Shambhulal Regar, has been arrested by police. His 14-year-old nephew who allegedly filmed the murder has also been held.

“This is a brutal crime. Prima facie it does not look like this is done by a normal human being.” Rajasthan DGP, O P Galhotra told reporters.
