On 8 November 2016, the Government of India announced demonetisation, commonly called as notebandi. At 9:00 pm on November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the nation, announced demonetisation in a bid to control black money and curb corruption. Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes became worthless pieces of paper overnight.

The historic decision was received with immense outrage from the opposition as well as the citizens. Banks and ATMs across the country were thronged with ordinary people desperately trying to change the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes and withdraw cash for basic necessities. While sadness, anger and restlessness engulfed the country, it also gave us reasons to laugh it off, all thanks to the internet! The internet produced some of the sassiest and funniest jokes and memes.
