Having an active sex life comes with its own set of worries. While shaving down under regularly and keeping the highway clear is always on top of your priority list, there’s always a risk of getting pregnant accidentally as no protection measure provides 100 percent protection. And if you manage to escape all these, there is your annoying monthly period that can give you a heart attack even if it arrives with a day’s delay. Ladies, we’ve all been there. If we miss our period, our heart skips a beat and we jump to the inevitable conclusion– PREGNANCY!
But don’t worry gals as there can be a million other explanations for you skipping your period. Here are nine of them:
Emergency contraceptive pills or the i-pill can cause trouble if you have been popping a lot of them lately. These pills contain two hormones– estrogen and progestin that alter your menstrual cycle as well. So don’t fret till you don’t have to.
2. Weight changes
Any major changes in your weight can set off your period clock. Rapid changes in weight affect the part of the brain, which also controls your periods. So, if you lost or gained 20 pounds recently and missed a period, you know whom to blame.
Stress is the root cause of many problems. From hypertension and depression to hormonal imbalance, stress is like the mother of all problems. And it can affect your menstrual cycle as well (as it affects your brain). So relax, will ya?
If your body or specifically, the immune system has been busy fighting off infections for a long time, even a simple cold or flu can push your period date further away.
5. PCOS/ PCOD
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or Polycystic Ovarian Disease can also lead to changes to your period cycle. Both the diseases cause abnormal changes in the hormonal levels of the body, leading to disruption in your normal menstrual cycle.
6. Hormonal imbalance
Everything in our body is controlled by hormones. It’s a delicate balance which can be disrupted from anything including illness and stress and even medication. So if your periods don’t arrive on time, blame it on the hormones.
So, you like to stay fit and you believe in sweating it out in the gym. But do you know excessive workout can ring trouble for your menstrual health and cause irregular periods? Get your routine straight and eat nutritious food and you should be fine.
8. Thyroid imbalance
The thyroid gland is one of the most important hormones producing glands of our body. An over active thyroid gland and an under active thyroid gland are both a problem. So, if you miss you periods, get your thyroid levels checked.
9. Disruption in routine
Our body has a very detailed system in place to deal with any kind of stress and it senses even the slightest changes in its surroundings. Changed cities? Switched to night shift? Expect a change in your periods as well.
