'Chai with cheese' to 'unicorn noodles': 9 crazy food trends of 2017

2017 saw its fair share of bizarre food fads -- from chai with cheese to unicorn noodles. Check out more here

The food industry reinvents ever so often that no two outings feel the same. There’s something new to try every time we go out and that’s what keeps us hooked. But sometimes, experimentation does take a whole new level we’d rather it didn’t. 2017 saw its fair share of bizarre food fads – from chai with cheese to unicorn noodles – and as the year ends, here’s another peek at the food trends that we didn’t know we needed.

1. Cheese Tea

One word: WHY? The combination of the gooey consistency of something like cheese with tea sounds bizarre. The trend started in countries like China, Taiwan and Malaysia, but took no time to enter the US. And obviously, that meant it became a hot topic everywhere else post that.

Cheese tea is made of iced tea, topped with cream cheese (salty or sweet).

2. Tandoori Chicken Sushi

Indians know how to give a desi touch to almost everything. Japanese brought sushi to us and we added an Indian touch to it. Sushi may be all about fish and rice, but in India, we’ve gone a step ahead with… tandoori chicken sushi. Apologies to the Japanese.

3. Chocolate momos

Let’s all agree to agree that momos are amazing. This year, we were introduced to chocolate momos, which apart from the chocolate, contain nuts as well. We’re still on the fence about this one.

4. Unicorn Food

From unicorn noodles to unicorn toast, Instagram was flooded with pictures of this pastel-hued trend this year. Though most of the items were just dyed foods, it was the unicorn latte that got everyone’s attention. It got popular after an NYC cafe, The End Brooklyn, came up with the beverage that includes ginger, lemon, coconut milk, honey, and E3Live blue-green algae.

5. Beetroot Lattes

It looks like that 2017 was all about experimenting with beverages and wellness. Beetroot latte was also one of the trendiest drinks of the year. This one is quite healthy as it has beetroot which provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Well, we can’t say anything for the taste. But beetroot and lattes, sounds weird. No?

6. Outrageous Loaded Desserts

Desserts, with chocolate, nuts, caramel and candy, is something nobody can say no to and if it is overloaded, it might look delicious. But not every time. Fully loaded milkshakes with anything and everything including donuts, candies, cocktails and cakes, made to the list of weird food trend in 2017.

7. Cotton Candy

Anyone for some cotton candy burritos or cotton candy pizza? Sounds weird? But this was one of the top food trends of 2017. This will certainly make you fall in love with pineapple pizza.

8. Cauliflower Pizza Crust

Another invention that took place this year was the cauliflower pizza crust. All you do is mix mashed cauliflower with eggs, spices and cheese for a pizza base. Killing the whole point of a pizza there, aren’t we?

9. Gold Flakes
We get glitter makeup, even if we may not approve of it, but food? In what world does that make sense? Garnishing pizzas, ice-creams and milkshakes with ‘gold flakes’ is OTT and a little weird.
