Jean Paul Gaultier's latest collection reimagines sarees as 'winter sports wear', because why not?

Embellished with fur-capped boots, woolen caps, with gowns under sheer pallus or pleated skirts over leggings - the collection is anything but forgettable

Celebrated premier French designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest Fall/Winter collection which he showcased in Paris, starred the saree as its showstopper. Gaultier’s love for the traditional Indian attire may be well documented, but thus is the first time the saree has ever been interpreted as winter sports wear for sure.

The designer fell in love with sarees at the age of 20, when he was in India for a visit. In an interview with Elle, Gaultier said: “The drape, the colours and the fabrics… saris have made me dream since my first trip to India, when I was barely 20. Indian women look royal in saris: it lends them greater beauty. As an outfit, it is extremely generous; it blends well with all shapes.”

Gaultier’s collection, which was featured by models in heavy jewelley (including noserings) and glittery makeup, uses everything from tulle to cashmere for the sarees. Embellished with fur-capped boots or woolen caps, gowns under sheer pallus or pleated skirts over leggings – the collection is anything but forgettable.
