On the occasion of Onam on September 4, a clip has gone viral in which nuns can be seen doing the traditional dance called Thiruvathirakali. The video which was posted by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on his Facebook page shows nuns dancing around a beautifully made pookalam (flower design).
“This is what makes Kerala God’s Own Country! Christian sisters performing Thiruvathirakali (a Hindu group dance) is not a rare sight in Kerala during Onam; it celebrates the spirit of oneness and prosperity”, Tharoor captioned the video.
The video has garnered more than 3,000 shares since it was uploaded by Congress MP. One of the social media users wrote, “The whole India should proudly say we are one with the hand full of Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikh and all other religions living together with cooperation and love”. “Right now Kerala is the best place to live in India. So peaceful and no communal tension”, wrote another.
However, there were some who claimed that it was a common sight as the festival is celebrated in Kerala by people irrespective of their religion. “I think Onam is a festival for all in Kerala. It has nothing to do do with only one religion. Keep it that way”, wrote a social media user.

Meanwhile, a few months ago, Shashi Tharoor also posted a photo on Twitter in which showed him talking to a man clad in saffron attire with three Muslim men were sitting on his other side and a board which read Y.M.C.A (Young Men’s Christian Association). The caption given by Shashi Tharoor read, “Typical Kerala: I am talking to a Swami after addressing a Muslim Jamaat meeting at the YMCA!”
