NEET Result 2017: Here's how Bathinda's Nikita Goyal became the only girl to be in Top 10

As many as 11, 38,890 students appeared for NEET this year, which was conducted on May 7. Out of those who sat for the exam, 6,11,539 students cleared it

By securing eight position in National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), Bathinda’s Nikita Goyal is the only girl in the top 10 ranks of NEET, the results of which were announced on Friday. But success did not come easily to her, she did not use social media, smartphones for past two years and focus only on her studies.

“She kept away from social media. I even asked her many times that she should get an android phone but she refused,” said her father Suresh Kumar who is an agriculture development officer.

It was Nikita’s brother, who is currently studying computer science at the Indian Institue of Technology (IIT) Delhi and secured All India Rank (AIR) 142 in the Joint Entrance Exam in the year 2015, who inspired her to perform really well in the exam.

Nikita who passed class XII from Sudesh Vatika School in Bhatinda, on talking about her college preference said she would want to take admission in Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical Collge and want to become a neurosurgeon.

On achieving this feat, she said “I worked hard but wasn’t sure about the rank, though teachers told me that they were expecting me to get a single digit rank”.

Nikita’s mother Rani Devi who is a senior lecturer in Bathinda Polytechnic College said that she now plans to take her out for shopping as in last 2 years she has worked really hard and has made a lot of sacrifices and after her success in the exam, she surely deserves a treat.

As many as 11, 38,890 students took the exam which was conducted on May 7. Around 9,13,033 took the exam in English, whereas, 1,20,663 students gave the exam in Hindi. Out of those who sat for the exam, 6,11,539 students cleared it.

Earlier, the NEET results were expected to come out on June 8 but due to the petitions filed demanding the cancellation of the exam, there was a delay in the announcement of results.
