'Jio Ne Bana Di Jodi', Says Twitter As Idea And Vodafone Announce Merger

We cannot decide whether we're more excited or nervous about how things will change with this merger.

It’s official! Idea and Vodafone have announced their merger on Twitter. Thanks to its current combined strength of 408 million active users, Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group and Vodafone Idea Limited’s remark that the merger has created ‘India’s leading telecom operator’, seems on point. With this, the telecom sector now has three major private companies and the state-operated BSNL fighting it out.

After the official announcement, Twitter did have a rather expected meltdown. Leading from the front was Reliance Jio Infocomm’s Twitter account, with sass to die for:

And then, the ‘haveli’ pun happened:

On August 30, The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the much-speculated merger to create the country’s biggest telecom operator.

Aditya Birla group sent out the official announcement:

The company, on their official website, wrote:

The combined company is designed to be agile, digitally savvy and future fit. It is a professionally run world-class organisation, combining the best from both Vodafone India and Idea Cellular. The company is committed to create a truly ‘Digital India’ by enabling millions of citizens to connect, join the digital revolution and build a better tomorrow. It will accelerate India’s progression towards a digital economy with a portfolio of quality products and services on offer under both its popular and loved brands – Vodafone and Idea.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the merger:

First things first:
