In a bid to counter the Opposition’s allegations that demonetisation is an “anti-poor decision”, prime minister Narendra Modi emphasised that the move was meant to help the poor. At a rally in Deesa (Gujarat) he said: “Before 8 November Rs 100 was never valued. Rs 50 notes had no value. But after 8 November, small people and small notes are valued. The poor are valued.” He further said that he had taken the decision to empower the poor and break the backs of the corrupt. He said that he was standing with all the people who were honest. “When you stand in the queue, you don’t stand for yourself but for the country.”

Thanking the youth of the country, he called upon everyone to help other’s get into the banking system, in the e-wallet system. He said: “Paper cash is the thing of the past. You don’t have to stand outside banks and ATMs. E-wallet is the future.” You don’t need to stand in the line, banks will stand in a queue on your mobile banking system, said the Prime minister.

He also said that the demonetisation policy has been able to weaken terrorist and Maoist networks “as they run on fake currency”. He hit out at the Opposition for not letting the Parliament function. He said: “Government has always said we are ready to debate. I am not being allowed to speak in Lok Sabha so I am speaking in the Jan Sabha.”
