Why Rose McGowan isn't impressed with Meryl Streep's plan to wear black to protest scandals at Golden Globes

Taking to Twitter, Rose McGowan slammed Meryl Streep and other actresses who planned to wear black at Golden Globes to protest against sexual harassment

Rose McGowan, one of the most prominent names to have alleged sexual misconduct by Harvey Weinstein, is not holding anything back, again. McGowan slammed Meryl Streep in her tweet after it was reported that the veteran actress would wear black at the Golden Globes Awards in a ‘silent protest’ of solidarity with victims of sexual harassment.

The Twitter warrior called Streep’s protest hypocritical and claimed women who worked with Weinstein were a part of the problem. The tweet is no longer available. Here’s what it read:

Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.

Marchesa is a high-end womenswear co-founded by Weinstein’s wife Georgina Chapman. In October, the fashion designer announced separation after sexual harassment allegations against Weinstein surfaced.

Award shows have time and again served as a medium for celebrities to voice their opinion on important issues. At Golden Globes awards earlier this year, Streep delivered a powerful speech against US President Donald Trump. This time around, she and other actresses are reportedly planning to wear black as a mark of protest against sexual harassment in the Hollywood industry.

When Streep was asked about the ‘silent protest’ being planned by wearing the colour, she said,

I don’t know. Not talking. You gotta tune in, don’t ya?

It is now perfectly clear that McGowan is not in favour of Streep’s reported way of protest. Her tweet on the issue, however, received backlash. Actress Amber Tamblyn took to Twitter to slam McGowan for attacking below-the-belt by suggesting they should wear Marchesa. She tweeted:

Streep collaborated with Weinstein in films like August: Osage County and The Iron Lady, the latter for which she received her third Oscar win. Breaking her silence on the scandal, Streep had in a statement said,

The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported. The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes. The behavior is inexcusable, but the abuse of power familiar. Each brave voice that is raised, heard and credited by our watchdog media will ultimately change the game.

The Golden Globes will take place on January 7 in Los Angeles and sexual harassment would obviously be one of the highly talked-about topics of the evening.
