This Karnataka Auto Driver Offers Free Rides To The Differently-Abled, Soldiers & Pregnant Women

In an increasingly factionalised world, where words like 'tolerance' and 'adjustment' are being re-appropriated, Managuli can teach us a lesson or two.

Swalpa adjust maadi! Bengaluru auto driver Munnesa Managuli gives a whole new meaning to the definitive phrase of the city.  In an increasingly factionalised world, where words like ‘tolerance’ and ‘adjustment’ are being re-appropriated, Managuli can teach us a lesson or two.

The 42-year-old BA graduate provides free rides to pregnant women, soldiers and people with physical disabilities.

Managuli has been driving an auto rickshaw for the last 11 years and helps people even during the odd hours of the day. Even at 3 am, his services are available for the people in need. Though right now Managuli can’t afford his own auto and pays a rent of Rs 250 per day to the owner, he wishes to have his own vehicle one day.

He started providing free rides to people in 2015 and has helped more than 2000 people till now.

While talking to The Hindu, Munnesa recalled an incident that inspired him to start the service. He said,

“In 1992 when I was in Narayanapura village in Basavanabagewadi taluk, I saw a pregnant woman die as she did not get an ambulance or any other vehicle to visit the hospital. That incident lingered in my mind and when I became an auto driver, I decided to provide free service to such persons.”

On Munnesa’s auto, it is clearly mentioned to whom he will offer free service.

“I am not doing the service for any award or appreciation, just for my personal satisfaction. I always feel elated when people who have taken my help call me back to express their gratitude, this itself is the biggest reward for me,” he said.
