Who says you need classical Indian music to perform a traditional folk dance? Well, lots of people actually but, they would be wrong. A dance troupe by the name Detour Odisha performed a classical Odissi dance to the tune of Ed Sheeran’s popular song Shape of You.
While you may have seen several dance choreography videos for Shape of You and several other amateur dancers attempting to try it out. Heck, even Disha Patani tried her hand at her favourite dancing anthem. After all, there’s no putting a stop to dancing when it comes to this Ed Sheeran song. So why should it be any different for Indian classical dancers?

The group that calls itself Detour Odisha picked the upbeat song because- A, why wouldn’t they? it is a great song!; and B, well, the song has great viral potential. And the motive of the group to tell the story of Odisha, its places and its people. Needless to say, they have been very much successful in teaching us a thing or two about Odissi classical dance, don’t you think?

“Dance and Music have no language barriers,” stated the dance group in their Youtube video. “We set out on a gorgeous day in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, to express the beautiful art of Odissi dance to one of the most popular songs of 2017 by Ed Sheeran.”

Apart from the grace witnessed in Indian dance forms, the video has been shot at picturesque heritage sites in Bhubaneswar including Dhauli Shanti Stupa, Sisupalgarh, and the Brahmeswara Temple. Their dance video has since gone viral and is being heavily praised across the internet.
