How did it all happen?

Jayavel’s family had to move to Chennai after their crops were ruined. The boy had no other option but to turn to begging after his father passed away and mother turned into a raging alcoholic.

Enter Uma Muthuraman and Jayavel’s life just changed for the better. Uma Muthuraman and her husband ran an NGO named Suyam Charitable Trust, came across Jayavel when they were making a documentary on street kids. The couple got him admitted to a school.

“Everyone in the school knew about me and my family. As we used to live right on the corner of the school on the pavement but that didn’t make any difference to me.hough I hated to study in the beginning and only wished to play, however, my attitude changed as I began to see the difference in life of other people and mine and how Uma and Muthuraman were struggling to educate me,” Jayanel told a leading daily.

Jayavel went on to study extremely hard and appeared for Cambridge University entrance exam after doing exceedingly well in his 12th examinations.
