As the rage around actor Rahul Bose being charged an exorbitant amount for two bananas barely died down, another high-end hotel is facing the ire for the same. A user on Twitter posted a picture of a bill allegedly from Four Seasons Hotel in Mumbai which showed that he had been charged Rs 1700 for two boiled eggs.

The bill also apparently showed an omelette being charged for Rs 850 and Diet Coke costing Rs 260, excluding taxes.

On the other hand, others justified the price by saying that the five-star hotel doesn’t just charge for the food but for providing amenities too.

Not the first such incident
Last month, actor Rahul Bose called out JW Mariott Chandigarh in a video wherein he alleged that he was billed Rs 442 for ordering two bananas, including GST. The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) said that the hotel did nothing “illegal” because it also charged for service. However, the Chandigarh Excise and Taxation Department served a show-cause notice to the hotel and imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 for levying GST.
UT Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner (AETC), Rajeev Chaudhary told The Indian Express,
“Yes, the hotel has been indicted for illegal collection of tax – because they charged tax on bananas which come under the category of fresh fruits that are a tax-free item. Fresh fruits are not taxable as per law. We have imposed a penalty on them.”
A few days later, the department levied a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the hotel for stocking liquor bottles without mandatory hologram.
