Last month, actor Rahul Bose called out JW Mariott Chandigarh for billing him Rs 442 for two bananas

As the rage around actor Rahul Bose being charged an exorbitant amount for two bananas barely died down, another high-end hotel is facing the ire for the same. A user on Twitter posted a picture of a bill allegedly from Four Seasons Hotel in Mumbai which showed that he had been charged Rs 1700 for two boiled eggs.

The bill also apparently showed an omelette being charged for Rs 850 and Diet Coke costing Rs 260, excluding taxes.

What people had to say on Twitter

Why dont people ask the price before ordering? I’m sure even chullu bhar paani would cost a fortune at 4 seasons…

इतने में तो अण्डो के वालिद मुर्ग़ा ही आ जाता ।

Remember when eggs didn’t cost all that much? Yeah. Good old times.

This is very ugly Trend and unfair practices of running eatery buisness in this country where nobody can justify such a cheating hotel.

On the other hand, others justified the price by saying that the five-star hotel doesn’t just charge for the food but for providing amenities too.

Let them disclose what room rent they are in, why go bananas over eggs (price). Unnecessary.

If you think that the price is unjustified, better you don’t consume it. The price charged is just not only for 2 eggs, it also includes the services provided by the hotel to you. so plzz just to defame a hotel property, don’t rattle around.

And also dont understand , why don’t people see the rate card in Menu and order , rather than looking for publicity on SM
No 5-star hotel forcing to order, pricing is their prerogative , we can always decide not to stay in 5-star or avoid food, there are Oyo hotel also …

Don’t be so ignorant. The chef who boiled your egg came from France, and it’s cooked in spring water using Himalayan pink salt. They used sanitized utensils and plates and served at your table in a impeccable https://t.co/zWSZjWNEOM’s totally worth the cost. Don’t blame hotel

Not the first such incident

Last month, actor Rahul Bose called out JW Mariott Chandigarh in a video wherein he alleged that he was billed Rs 442 for ordering two bananas, including GST. The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) said that the hotel did nothing “illegal” because it also charged for service. However, the Chandigarh Excise and Taxation Department served a show-cause notice to the hotel and imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 for levying GST.

UT Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner (AETC), Rajeev Chaudhary told The Indian Express,

“Yes, the hotel has been indicted for illegal collection of tax – because they charged tax on bananas which come under the category of fresh fruits that are a tax-free item. Fresh fruits are not taxable as per law. We have imposed a penalty on them.”

A few days later, the department levied a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the hotel for stocking liquor bottles without mandatory hologram.
