From Baahubali 2 to IPL, here's what India tweeted in 2017

Twitter India recently shared its top trends in India list and #Baahubali2, #GST and #IPL were the top trends

What do you think were the most trending topics of 2017? Gujarat elections? GST? Google CEO Sundar Pichai leaving everything to address the burger emoji? Well, you don’t need to rattle your brains as Twitter has got you covered. Twitter India, in a bit of an emotional meltdown and as a part of its annual tradition, shared the #ThisHappened list in a rather nostalgic post.

The list includes top trends from three of India’s favourite topics — entertainment, politics and sports. And guess who stole the show this year? Baahubali 2! Yep, while we saw the Baahubali 2 fever go rampant on Twitter in India with many Tweeps giving their own theories of why Katappa killed Baahubali, on the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘mann ki baat’ started a trend of people pouring their hearts out on social media.

Here’s a list of the hashtags that created a buzz on Twitter:

#baahubali2
S S Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2 was all about one question — ‘Katappa ne Baahubali ko kyu mara?’. While the conclusion managed to satisfy the curiosity of Baahubali fans, it also managed to create a buzz on social media, not only in India but globally too.

Thanks to its star cast, Bigg Boss manages to create a strong buzz on social media every year. And this year was no different, except we had ‘Bhabhiji’ Shilpa Shinde and ‘aadarsh bahu’ Hina Khan leading the charade.

#Mersal
A surprise entry in Twitter’s pan-India trends list was the Tamil blockbuster Mersal — starring Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, S J Surya, Vadivelu and Sathyaraj. The film allegedly contained commentary on the recently implemented GST and the BJP supporters staged protests against its release even though it was cleared by the CBFC. The alleged scenes were cut from the movie.

#Diwali
What to say, we Indians love Diwali (for obvious reasons). But this year, the festival of lights managed to create a buzz owing to the cracker ban in Delhi NCR.

#gst
Goods and Service Tax not only managed to jolt the country but also the social media, becoming one of the most talked about topics on Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is quite popular for sharing his ‘mann ki baat’. So it wasn’t shocking when this started a trend of people sharing their ‘mann ki baat’ on Twitter.

India is crazy about cricket and nothing surpassed the clash of titans at the ICC Champions Trophy. The trend created a buzz in the cyberspace owing to India’s loss to Pakistan in the finals of the Champions Trophy in 2017.

#indvpak
If there’s one match that cricket fans in India wouldn’t dare to miss it’s the India vs Pakistan match. So when the two teams hit the ground, it was bound to create some friction both on the pitch and off the pitch.

#IPL
This one speaks for itself. IPL mania in India continued for months and fans constantly cheered for their favourite teams both on the ground and on social media.

Women’s Cricket World Cup 2017 made a surprise entry on Twitter trends this year. 2017 was the year when fans cheered for the Indian women’s team just as they do for the men’s team. Even though the Mithali Raj-led side lost the finals to England, women’s cricket grabbed eyeballs and took centre stage just before the IPL.

Happy New Year Tweeps!
