It’s the season of goodbyes. After Microsoft’s photo-editing software Paint and Google’s Instant Search, it’s time that we bid adieu to Apple’s iPod. Apple Inc. has decided to discontinue last of its app-free music players– iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle, leaving behind the world full of nostalgia.
The two music players have been taken off from Apple’s online store and will soon vanish from the company’s retail store as well. The only music player still holding the fort is iPod Touch, which might vanish from the Apple’s collection soon given the growing popularity of the over-performing Apple iPhone.
“Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano,” Apple said in a statement announcing the news.
Apple launched the original iPod in 2001 nearly 6 years before the company launched iPhone in 2007. While it not the first portable music player on the shelves, it was one of kind (at the time) as it allowed music lovers to save 1,000 songs on a tiny gadget. 4 years later in 2005, the Cupertino-based company launched iPod Shuffle with a flash storage drive. The same year, the company introduced iPod Shuffle with a tiny body and a ‘spin wheel’. The company stopped updating iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano in 2010 and 2012 respectively. Two years later Apple killed the original iPod– iPod Classic.

Even as the original iPod is going away, you still have a chance to own a piece of history by getting iPod Touch. Even though the 16GB and 64GB variants have been discontinued, the 32GB and 128GB variants are available for $199 and $299 respectively. Meanwhile, let’s observe a minute of silence for our dearly departed iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle…
