Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill rose to fame with their performances in Under-19 World Cup 2018 which saw India become the champion for the fourth time. Shaw has been under the spotlight since his school days but Gill burst into the scene with his performances in U-19 WC 2018. The two were picked by Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 franchises Delhi Daredevils (DD) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) respectively.
Shreyas Iyer will be leading the India ‘A’ ODI squad. Iyer took the buck to captain DD after Gautam Gambhir stepped down from the position. He has also been selected in the ODI squad for England. Here’s what the 23-year-old had to say about the opportunity:
“Obviously, big opportunity to play again overseas. I haven’t played that many matches in subcontinent but playing abroad is going to be really important because next World Cup is going to be in England. If I really score well there I might be in the recurring. Also the current form I am in it will be really helpful for me to play in England and get the experience as much as possible.”
Shaw has been phenomenal when opening the batting for DD. He has scored 205 runs from 5 matches already, including two half-centuries. On the other hand, Gill did not get many chances as he batted down the order for KKR. However, he made his presence felt with a match-winning half-century which got him promoted up the order.
Krishnappa Gowtham, Prasidh Krishna, Deepak Chahar are a few other IPL 2018 stars who made it into the ODI squad. Karun Nair, who has been in and out of the side after scoring a triple century, has been selected to lead India ‘A’ team against England in Tests. Prithvi has made it into the side as well whereas Gill has missed out.
Mayank Agarwal has been rewarded for a fantastic domestic season. Rajneesh Gurbani, Mohammed Siraj and Ankit Rajpoot too will be bowling in pacer-friendly pitch conditions of England.
