Indian Open Finals review: PV Sindhu STEAMROLLS Marin in straight sets, 21-19, 21-16, Rio avenged

Indian Open 2017: The score read 21-19, 21-16, but believe you me, Sindhu and Marin played and fought for every inch, nothing came easy and why should it

They called it the ‘battle of the decade’ also the ‘clash of the titans’, but the scoreline will fail you to believe Rio silver medalist PV Sindhu ran through her finals but that was not to be. It was an high-octane game played with high intensity. The score read 21-19, 21-16, but believe you me, they played and fought for every inch, nothing came easy and why should it. At Rio, Sindhu had lost gold to the Spaniard Carolina Marin.

Before today’s match, the two modern day legends had met nine matches, Marin holding the edge, winning five of them. But what played in Sindhu’s favour may have been she had got the better of Marin in Dubai last year. But, today was an all-new day a whole new game.

In both the sets, Sindhu got off to a flier but then saw Marin claw back from behind in style but Sindhu was too good for Marin today and the crowd added to Marin’s burden as they were totally rooting for the home favourite.

This win is surely bound to take Sindhu’s confidence to an-all new high, which augurs well for the future of Indian badminton.
