Lionel Messi Fan In India Hangs Self After Argentina's World Cup Exit, 2nd Incidence In Two Weeks

Unable to cope with Argentina's exit from the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia, a Lionel Messi fan in West Bengal resorted to suicide

Unable to cope with Argentina’s exit from the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia, a Lionel Messi fan in West Bengal resorted to suicide by hanging himself. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, failed to qualify for the quarterfinals after losing out to France in a seven-goal thriller on July 1.

The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Mantosh Haldar. He was the resident of Chhatiangachhi village in Malda district, The Telegraph reported.

“He (Mantosh) was a football lover and a fan of Maradona and Argentina. He used to spend most of his time watching football on TV and playing with local lads. After Argentina’s defeat on Saturday night, he became very upset. He did not even talk to us. Later this morning, we found him hanging in the room,” the deceased’s father was quoted as saying.

The local police have initiated a probe in the matter.

However, this was not the first incident to come out of India during the World Cup. Earlier in Kerala, a 30-year old Messi fan was found dead after he went missing following Argentina’s 3-0 loss to Croatia on June 21. A suicide note was found from his room in which he mentioned that he had ‘nothing to look forward to now’.
