Earlier in the day, Prithvi Shaw won the toss and chose to bat on a good Christchurch wicket. India got off to a solid start as the openers put on an 81-run stand before India U-19 lost its first wicket. Shubman Gill then took charge and smashed a brilliant 102* off 94 balls. His innings was laced with 7 boundaries and he brought up his ton of the penultimate ball of the innings.
