Chennai Super Kings won the toss on the opening night at the Wankhede Stadium and opted to bowl first against defending champions Mumbai Indians. Evin Lewis, Mumbai Indians new recruit was brought onboard with high-expectations during IPL 2018 Auctions. He opened along with Rohit Sharma for Mumbai Indians and in the second over itself, he was trapped in front of the stumps by an inswinger by Deepak Chahar.

Chahar went up in appeal, and the umpire raised his finger, that is when the world got to see the first use of DRS in IPL. It is a new addition to the tournament, to keep it error-free. The replays showed that he was out as the ball was headed to hit the stumps. He became the first batsman to be given out, despite using DRS.
