He opened along with Rohit Sharma for Mumbai Indians and in the second over itself, he was trapped in front of the stumps by an inswinger by Deepak Chahar.

Chahar went up in appeal, and the umpire raised his finger, that is when the world got to see the first use of DRS in IPL. It is a new addition to the tournament, to keep it error-free. The replays showed that he was out as the ball was headed to hit the stumps. He became the first batsman to be given out, despite using DRS.

He also became the 11th player to be dismissed for a duck on debut for Mumbai Indians.
