Why The Controversial Leader Gopal Kanda Is Back In News

In 2012, he was arrested after a former air-hostess of his airlines committed suicide accusing him of harassment.

Controversial politician Gopal Kanda has once again emerged as the kingmaker after Haryana assembly results were declared on October 24. Gopal Kanda of Haryana Lokhit Party, who won from Sirsa assembly seat has agreed to support BJP which fell short of majority by winning only 40 seats.

But who is Gopal Kanda?

From owning a radio repair shop and shoe factory in Sirsa to real estate business in Gurugram, Kanda has witnessed a meteoric rise due to his proximity with politicians. In 2007, he started his own MDLR airlines which closed down in two years. In 2009, he won the assembly elections as an independent candidate from Sirsa. The then Hooda-led Congress govt made him the home minister after he offered them support. In 2012, he was arrested after a former air-hostess of his airlines committed suicide accusing him of harassment. A year later, her mother too ended her life and left a suicide note. Kanda was released on bail after 18 months but he is still facing the trial. Besides, there are several cases of  of developing illegal property which are registered against him. Currently, he runs a casino business in Goa
