Padmaavat: Karni Sena members vandalise school after students perform on Ghoomar

Karni Sena has made it clear they don't want Padmaavat to release, but this is a new low even for them

The Rajput Karni Sena allegedly vandalised a private school in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh, after students performed on the song Ghoomar, from upcoming movie Padmaavat. The fringe-group has made it clear that they are against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, based on the life of Rajput Queen Padmini.

Reportedly, the members of the Sena attacked St Paul’s school in Jaora. They barged in when students from the elementary classes were performing on the song at the annual function. Nearly a dozen members of the fringe group created ruckus, broke chairs, stage, and misbehaved with the administration. One student was injured in the quarrel, according to a media report.

The sub-divisional police officer DR Male told a daily that four people from the group have been arrested. Rajput Karni Sena has sought an order for a ban on the song, which was issued earlier by the district education officer, and later the restrictions were withdrawn.

The song in the movie is picturised on Deepika Padukone. When the song released, it found itself at the center of a controversy. Royals from Chattisgarh slammed the song saying Rajput queens never danced in front of anyone and that ghoonghat wasn’t low enough. Heena Singh Judeo, daughter-in-law of Dilip Singh Judeo of Chhattisgarh’s former royal family said,

“History has witnessed that none of the Rajput maharanis has ever danced in front of anyone, and they cannot play with history.”

A women’s cell, Kshatrani Sankalp had also expressed displeasure over the song, saying it showed the Queen dancing showing her mid-riff, which is a faulty portrayal of the Rajputs.

While the entire controversy around Padmaavat refuses to die down, vandalising a school is a new low, even for Rajput Karni Sena. What was supposed to be Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s most ambitious project has become a raging national debate that just keeps getting more and more ridiculous.
