New Zealand Double-centurion Amelia Kerr Goes Past Vivian Richards' 31-Year-Old Feat

New Zealand's Amelia Kerr thrashed Ireland on her own with a never-seen-before all-round performance

New Zealand Women piled up many records in the three-match ODI series against Ireland Women. They managed to post a total in excess of 400 in every game of the ODI series. They scored 490 in the first match, which is a world record in both men’s cricket and women’s cricket. That was followed by outstanding 418 and 440 in the next two matches.

However, it was 17-year-old New Zealand opener Amelia Kerr who stole the limelight by recording the highest score by a woman cricketer in ODIs. Kerr scored 232 runs from 145 deliveries with the help of 31 fours and 2 sixes. She gave a tough competition to Rohit Sharma who holds the record for highest individual score in ODIs (264).

After her ‘once in a lifetime’ first innings, Kerr managed to dazzle with the ball as well. She broke the backbone of the Irish batting lineup by picking up the wickets of batswomen who were trying to get to a respectable total. She picked up five wickets in 7 overs which included two maidens.

She helped the opposition team bundle out for a mere 135 in 44 overs and register a massive win by 305 runs. She became the first international woman cricketer to score a double century and get a five-wicket haul in a single match.

She went past Windies legend Vivian Richards’ 31-year-old feat. Richards scored a century (119 runs) against New Zealand and took a five-wicket haul (5 for 41) in 1987. He is followed by UAE’s Rohan Mustafa who scored 109 runs and got five wickets for 25 runs in 2017 against Papua New Guinea.

Kerr, Richards and Mustafa are the only international cricketers barring former English all-rounder Paul Collingwood (112 runs, 6 wickets for 31) who have scored runs in excess of 100 and took a five-wicket haul in a match.

There is only one female cricketer who has scored a century and got four wickets in a single match. West Indies’ Stefanie Taylor scored 135 and picked up four wicket against New Zealand in 2013. In men’s cricket, the list of players with a hundred and four-fer is long. Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Gayle, Nathan Astle and eight other cricketers have achieved this feat.
