In 2015, a Pakistani man killed his 12-year-old daughter because she did not make ‘gol’ roti. And in 2017, a Delhiite killed his 22-year-old pregnant wife as she couldn’t make him perfectly ’round’ chappatis. As you can see, in India, making round rotis is more than a life skill. It’s actually a life-saving skill. Especially, if you are a woman.
But hey, this is the 21st century and Beti Bachao is an official hashtag. Which got us thinking. Is making a round roti just a girl’s job? We asked some girls and some boys to make ‘perfect’ roti and here is what happened.
