Would allow deportation only after verifying claims, Sushma Swaraj reacts to US list of illegal Indian immigrants

Studies say, the number of unauthorised migrants in the US has increased by 130,000 from 2009 to 2014 to 500,000

External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has said that the Trump Administration is planning to deport more than 271 Indian nationals whom they have identified as illegal immigrants in the United States. However, Swaraj has refused to believe US claims and said that MEA will verify the nationalities of enlisted people.

Speaking during the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Sushma said, “We have not accepted this list and have sought more details. We have said that it is only after we verify the details, can we issue an emergency certificate for their deportation.”

“How do we believe the claims in the list until we verify the nationalities of these people? ” Sushma questioned. However, no response from the Trump administration has been received on the deportation list.

According to a report by the Pew Research Center, the number of unauthorised migrants in the US has increased by 130,000 from 2009 to 2014 and the stats have reached to a number of 500,000 people. Many of these has been living in the US and have extended their visas as well.

Some studies have also suggested that around 12,885 Indian have overstayed their visas in 2015. These numbers are much lesser than that of people coming from other countries like Canada and Mexico.
