Women cannot enter Padmanbhaswamy temple wearing Churidar, says Kerala HC

The decision comes days after the the dress code normas were relaxed.

Even after the Executive Officer(EO) at the Padmanbhaswamy temple relaxed the dress code for women to enter the temple, the Kerala High Court on Thursday ruled that women wearing churidar or salwar kameez will not be allowed to enter the temple.

Now, only the women in sarees or a dhoti and blouse will be allowed to enter the temple. The website of the Padmanbhaswamy temple states:

“There is a special dress code. The dress code for men is Dhoti with or without Angavastra(upper body cloth). The dress codes for women are Sarees, Dhoties or Pavadas with blouse or other coverings as appropriate to their age. Salvar sets and other modern dresses are not allowed. Young girls below 12 years may wear gowns. No other types of dress should not be worn or taken inside the temple.”

In a first, the women had entered the temple in churidars on 1 December after the dress code norms were relaxed. The der decision is being taken after a number of Hindu outfits staged protests against the decision taken by the EO.
