In a moving gesture, a police officer adopted a 12-year-old boy after the murder of his mother a few days ago orphaned him. Karthik (12), who studied at a boarding school in Mylapore, Chennai, was welcomed into the family of Assistant Commissioner of Police Balamurugan, who was investigating the murder.
Karthik’s mother, Parimala (33), used to live in a rented house on Subburayan Street, Nammalwarpet, Tamil Nadu, after her husband Govindaraj passed away. According to The Hindu, on Friday, Parimala was murdered after a dispute by a 17-year-old boy living on the first floor of the building where she lived.
When Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ayanavaram), M Balamurugan, visited the spot, he learnt that the victim had a 12-year-old son who didn’t know about the murder and was waiting at the police station, the report stated. He then broke the news to Karthik and consoled him.
Balamurugan told The Times of India, “He sat staring at the roof not knowing why he was at a police station. We had to gently break it to him that his mother had been killed.” He added, “I choked up just preparing to give such terrible news to a young boy. When I told him, I could see he was shattered. He sat at the table looking at me with disbelief.”
Balamurugan, who has a son and a daughter, went home later that day and after a discussion with his wife, decided to adopt the boy. The next morning, he submitted an undertaking to Karthik’s school, offering to be his guardian. He then took the boy home.
