'Rich getting richer, poor staying poor'. These 5 graphics show India's wealth gap

The wealthy accumulate riches while millions of people struggle to survive. 

Amid the ongoing World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland where global politicians and business leaders have gathered, development charity organisation Oxfam has come up with a report which shows a glaring gap in wealth between the rich and the poor across the world.

In the report titled ‘Reward Work, Not Wealth’, Oxfam surveyed 70,000 people in 10 countries. It says that 42 people hold as much wealth as the  3.7 billion who make up the poorest half of the world’s population, revealing how the global economy enables the wealthy elite to accumulate vast wealth even as hundreds of millions of people struggle to survive on poverty pay.

The report also depicts a worrying picture of rising income inequality in India with the top getting richer and richer and the millions at the bottom being trapped in poverty wages. It added that the growing divide undermines democracy and promotes corruption and cronyism.
