The Narendra Modi government is devising innovative ways to promote Aadhaar and make it more appealing to common man.  The latest being a social media contest under which UIDAI has asked parents to record and submit the videos of their child highlighting various benefits of Aadhaar. The video needs to appeal to children and grown-ups to get their Aadhaar enrollment done and to explain how their family or friends derived benefit from Unique Identification number. A total of 70 top videos will be selected  on the basis of creativity, entertainment and  how well the message has been communicated. The top 20 winners would be awarded a cash prize of Rs 5000 and the remaining winners (50) would be gives Rs 1000 each. There are only four days left for the contest ( April 8- April 22) and the winners will be contacted on May 3.

The government has made Aadhaar mandatory for most of its scheme as it aims to ensure proper distribution of benefits to common man and tackle corruption. The latest being the linking of Permanent Account Number with Aadhaar id, a measure that seeks to curb use of multiple PAN cards by individuals  to evade taxes.

The government’s over-emphasis on Aadhaar has drawn flak from opposition parties amid alleged violation of an SC order that says it should not be made mandatory for schemes which are not linked to subsidies.
