UP ministers want 'bhagwa' coloured school uniforms; Yogi Adityanath scraps idea

On April 3, the UP CM had expressed his desire to replace the khaki uniform for students in state-run schools with smarter dresses.

Once a saffron poster boy, Yogi Adityanath has surprised everyone with his decisions ever since he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Known for his fiery speeches and controversial statements, Adityanath seems to have completely changed after taking the oath to run India’s most politically significant state.

In April first week, the UP CM had expressed his desire to replace the khaki uniform for students in state-run schools with smarter dresses that adhere to Indian culture.

Yesterday, a meeting was called by Yogi Adityanath to discuss the colour of school uniforms. Several UP ministers and officials of the Basic Education Department were present at the meeting. After hours of discussions, the decision on what will be the colour of school uniforms was taken by the UP CM, and it surprised everybody present at the meeting!

According to a Dainik Bhaskar report, Yogi asked his ministers to give their suggestions during the meeting, and in order to impress the UP CM, they suggested that either the school uniform should be ‘bhagwa’ (saffron) coloured or ‘lotus’ coloured (BJP party symbol).

Everybody was expecting that Yogi would get impressed by their suggestion. However, the UP CM ‘felt disappointed’ and kept mum for a few minutes before announcing the decision.

After going through some sample uniforms, Yogi Adityanath decided that the colour of school uniforms will be decided by the school children and nobody else.

The move is part of the new BJP government’s reforms that aim to clean up the state’s education sector. It will impact an estimated 1.85 crore students in over 1 lakh government-run primary and more than 45,000 upper primary schools in 75 districts of the state.
