In October 2016, the Karnataka government had agreed with SC's decision to release 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water till the next verdict comes.

The Supreme court of India has asked Karnataka to continue releasing 2000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu every day till it decides on the tribunal order. Earlier on December 15, the apex court ordered to maintain the status quo between the two states and adjourned the case till January 4.

In October 2016, the Karnataka government had agreed with SC’s decision to release 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water till the next verdict comes. The Law and Parliamentary affair minister T B Jayachandra said that the Karnataka Government will stick to the SC’s decision.

Earlier, a bench of three judges headed by Justice Dipak Misra, which heard the crucial proceeding on various issues arising out of the dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over Cauvery water sharing, had said it first intended to adjudicate the issue of maintainability of appeals filed by both the states and Kerala against the Cauvery water dispute tribunal’s 2013 award.

The bench also mentioned that it would first look after the issue of maintainability of appeals filed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Puducherry and Kerala against the award of the tribunal and then bring the issues filed by the committee under focus.

Both the states, Karnataka and Tamilnadu, had witnessed a massive chaos in September 2016 over the Cauvery water sharing issue. Protests in both states against each other led a furious violence and Section 144 was also imposed in Bengaluru. The unrest also had affected the inter-state transportation and numerous public properties were set on fire.
