MK Stalin succeeds father Karunanidhi, elected as DMK's party president

It is being assumed that the deteriorating health of DMK chief Dr. M Karunanidhi has forced his son to take charge of the party.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and Dr. M Karunanidhi’s son MK Stalin have been declared as the new party president. Stalin was elected unanimously in the DMK general council meeting.

The meeting was held at the party headquarters Anna Arivalayam in Chennai.

Before getting elected as the president he had the post of treasurer in the party. But the deteriorating health of patriarch Dr. M Karunanidhi has forced the party to look at younger leaders.

Last month, Karunanidhi was admitted to the hospital after he complained of breathing difficulty. The Kauvery hospital released a press release saying that the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was admitted due to breathing difficulty and lung infection. The hospital further affirmed that he was in a stable condition as of now.

In the absence of Karunanidhi, it was his son Stalin who has been running the party as the leader of the opposition. He also led the assembly elections in 2016. Stalin has continuously been trying to bring in new culture in Tamil Nadu.
