Live updates: Narendra Modi's speech on New Year 2017 eve

The wait is over. The Prime Minister has finally addressed the nation on the new year's eve and this what it is all about.

After a lot of anticipation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on 31 December a day after his 50-day deadline of bringing back stability across the nation, post demonetisation ended.

While people across the nation wondered what the Prime Minister was going to talk about, reports suggested that he was going to show a roadmap after demonetisation. The Prime Minister had appealed to the people across the nation to bear the pain caused due to demonetisation for 50 days urging them to “punish” him if he fails to bring change.

Here’s what he said during his speech:

-India has witnessed a “Shiddhi Yagna” since Diwali.

-Tough decisions taken since Diwali. I am extremely overwhelmed with all the support the general public has extended to the government since demonetisation.

-I am aware of all the problems you have to face since demonetisation and I want you to know that I appreciate all the sacrifices and problems faced since demonetisation. 125 crore people have redefined the concept of sacrifice.

-You will be surprised to know that according to data, only 24 lakh people in the country have declared that their salary is above Rs 10 lakh under Income Tax.

-The honest wanted freedom from corruption and the government is a friend of the honest and the law won’t spare people hoarding black money. The honest were forced to surrender.

-Our focus will be to bolster the banking system. The problems faced by the people is a testament to the better days ahead.

-The government has come up with 2 schemes for houses for the poor. In the year 2017, 4 % exemption on interest will be given to the people opting for house loans upto Rs 9 lakh and 3 % exemption for people taking upto Rs 12 lakh. The government has taken these decisions to enable poor and middle class people to purchase houses

-33% new homes will be built in rural India. The credit guarantee for small traders and medium enterprises will be raised to Rs 2 Crore.

-Rs 6000 will be given to pregnant women as assistance and the money will be transferred directly to their bank account.

-I urge the people across the country, especially the youth to connect themselves to the BHIM app launched by the government yesterday.

-Politicians must rise about policies, conspiracies and strive towards transparency. The government has also taken cognisance of the senior citizens and they will be ensured 8% interest on their deposits upto Rs 7.5 Lakh.
