A Congress MLA has been booked on the charge of rape, after a woman, who also attempted suicide, claimed that she was being harassed by him.

A Congress MLA has been booked on the charge of rape, after a 51-year-old woman, who also attempted suicide, claimed that she was being harassed by him. The Congress MLA has been identified as M Vincent, who represents the Kovalam segment.

A case has been registered against him on charges of stalking, rape and abatement of suicide based on the statement given by the woman who had last week tried to end her life at nearby Balaramapuram, according to a Hindustan Times report.

The city magistrate also recorded her statement at a hospital in Neyyatinkara, where she is undergoing treatment. Following the complaint, Vincent alleged that there was a “political conspiracy” behind the allegation against him and filed a complaint with police, demanding a detailed probe into the matter.

Vincent accused that a CPI(M) local leader was present at the woman’s house when she attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills.

Police had registered an abatement of suicide case against Vincent after the woman’s husband filed a complaint with police. He alleged that the Vincent used to repeatedly call her over the phone and harass her.

The police is also expected to consider taking the MLA’s statement after the medical examination of the complainant. The procedure could not be completed as the complainant is still under treatment for poisoning.

According to a Times of India report, an audio clip of an alleged telephonic conversation between Vincent and the complainant’s brother about settling the case amicably was leaked to the media on July 20.
