Over 300 private engineering colleges might be asked to stop admissions

The move is reportedly due to the declining number of students who enroll in these colleges.

Looks like the 2018-2019 academic year is going to witness a bigger scramble for admissions as over 300 private engineering colleges might be asked to not continue with the admission process.

The move to discontinue new admissions for the following year for these colleges was done in keeping with their declining rate of enrollment. As per reports, another 500 colleges with a rapidly decreasing admission rate will come under the scanner next.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) lists over 3,000 private colleges on its website which offer under-graduate engineering courses catering to 13.56 lakh students.

“We are deliberating on the issue. Closure is an easy option, but that could also lead to many complications as they have invested money, have bank loans. Taking a holistic view, those institutions which are border line cases may not be asked to close down but they will be asked to choose alternate options on their own,” says AICTE chairperson Anil D Sahasrabudhe.

It remains to be seen whether the colleges will be asked to shut down or will be converted to vocational training centres instead – the option of choosing either willreportedly be given to the colleges.
