Kerala’s motor vehicle department issued a speeding ticket to Kerala governor P Sathasivam’s official vehicle after his driver breached the speed limit at a stretch in Thiruvananthpuram.

Though the Governor was not travelling on his official Mercedes Benz car at the time of the incident, he directed his staff to pay the fine of Rs 400 immediately and procure a receipt. The violation happened at Kowdiar-Vellayambalam stretch where the car was apparently out for some maintenance work where it crossed the prescribed the speed limit of 55 km per hour.

The Governor’s car was booked for exceeding the speed limit ten days ago and a challan was sent last week. Though MVD officials were initially reluctant to send notice to the Governor’s office but later decided to follow the rule, Hindustan Times reported.

“He has set a great example showing no one is above the law of the land. It is an example for those who often flout laws and get away using their positions,” a senior official of the MVD told the daily.

Shockingly, the aforementioned stretch is one of the busiest route in the city and has been witnessing nearly 3000 violations every day, a Times of India report said.

The MVD and police had installed speed detection cameras along the busiest stretch in the state capital after a spate of accidents and the revenue generated by fines in a month was approximately Rs 1.10 crore.
