Mumbai will have Mayor from Shiv Sena, we are not in race: CM Devendra Fadnavis

"We will not be in the opposition, we will support the ruling party but will not compromise on transparency", said Fadnavis

In a big win to Shiv Sena, Bhartiya Janta Party has pulled out of the mayor race in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on March 4 said that BJP is not putting up a candidate for the post of Mayor or Deputy Mayor.

Emphasising on the issue of transparency, Fadnavis said, “We will not be in the opposition, we will support the ruling party but will not compromise on transparency”.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena announced Vishvanath Mahadeshwar as the party candidate for the post of mayor. The development has come after both Shiv Sena and BJP fell short of gaining majority in the BMC polls. Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena won 84 seats while BJP got 82 seats whereas for forming majority total 114 seats were required.

Few days back, the ruling Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray has emerged as the number one party in the BMC polls after the results of 227 BMC seats were declared. Shiv Sena topped the chart after winning 84 seats in the civic body but fall short 30 seats for a clear majority.

Besides Shiv Sena, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended on the second slot in Mumbai in the civic body elections held across Maharashtra by wining 82 seats.
