The story of a boy from a village in Rajasthan who has cracked JEE-Advanced 2017 is surely going to remind everyone Aamir Khan’s role in the highly appreciated movie- 3 Idiots. Ranchod Ram who will soon be joining the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) not only shares the name with the lead in the movie ( his name was Ranchod Das Chanchad) but like him, he too loves machines and has the desire to study engineering.
In his second attempt, Ranchod has secured 2078 rank and with this, he has the become the first person ever from his village to crack the exam and to study in the prestigious engineering college. He is planning to do B Tech either in one of these three branches: Electrical, Computer Science, Electrical and Communication.
Ranchod’s hails from Jalore’s Jhak village in Rajasthan, his father is a MNREGA worker while his mother is a home-maker. His elder brother who works in Andhra Pradesh also supports the family financially.
“I scored 78 per cent in class 10 and 80 per cent in class 12. My uncle took me to Kota where Allen career institute saw my talent and had cut down the fees by half. My uncle’s son was also taking coaching from Kota and we shared room, books and phone. My entire expenditure was taken care by him”, said Ranchod. He has not given much thought on what he will do after completing his graduation.
As many as 2.20 lakh students appeared for the JEE Advanced exam this year, however, only 1.7 lakh took the exam. For the first time ever, IITs also held the test in other countries too and the six centres to choose from were Singapore, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Ethiopia and the UAE. In 2017, IITs gave 11 marks extra to the students who took the exam. The step was taken to compensate for the three ‘ambiguous’ questions that were asked in the JEE (Advanced) exam.
