Stones were pelted at the funeral of the army officer, Umar Fayaz who was killed by terrorists in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir

On a day when slain Army officer Umar Fayaz was being laid to rest, reports emerged of stone pelting during his funeral. As per reports by several news channels including India Today and CNN News18, a number of people had reportedly gathered to pay their respects to the late army officer during his funeral procession. The visuals being shared could not be independently verified by InUth.com.

However, Nazir Masoodi reporting from the ground claimed that such reports of stone throwing were wrong. “Reports of stone throwing at the body of Lt Umar Fayaz are baseless.I was there in Kulgam.Spoke to people, there is sense of loss&disbelief,” he tweeted on Wednesday.

The body of Lieutenant Umar Fayaz was on Tuesday recovered with several bullet marks from near the Herman Chowk area of the district. Condemning the incident, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had called the attack a ‘dastardly act of cowardice’. He had also called the slain officer a role model.

Umar was abducted while he was attending a wedding of a relative in the area. “The Army salutes the braveheart and stands by the bereaved family in this hour of tragedy. We are committed to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act of terror to justice,” an army official said.

Commissioned on December 10, 2016 from the National Defence Academy, Lt. Fayaz was set to head for the Young Officers Course in September this year. “He was part of the Hockey Team of NDA, excellent volleyball player. He was physically tough and the troops enjoyed being with him,” the Army said.
