2G Scam Verdict: Twitter calls it a #RabNeBanaDiJodi between Congress and BJP

2G Scam is India's biggest corruption scandal!

Thursday was a happy day for former telecom minister A Raja and DMK supremo Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi.

A special court in Delhi acquitted the former UPA minister and several other top politicians and business executives in the infamous 2G spectrum case.

Even though the correct figure of loss to the public exchequer couldn’t be ascertained, the Comptroller and Auditor General had once stated that the 2G scam cost Indian government Rs 176,000 crore. The scandal which rocked Congress-led UPA II government in 2008, is India’s biggest corruption scandal.

On Thursday, the court acquitted all the 17 accused for alleged below-market-price sale of telecoms permits to a selected groups of companies who allegedly paid kickbacks to the minister and his associates.

Such was the impact of 2G scam on Congress’s image that many still believe it’s one of the major reasons for the party’s rout in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Pertinently, ahead of 2014 elections, BJP had vociferously raked up 2G scam and coal block allocations scam during its campaigning. It was one of the foundations on which Prime Minister Narendra Modi crafted his aura of an anti-corruption crusader if voted to power. While the ruling party has already said the court’s decision will be challenged, many are unconvinced about BJP’s seriousness in tackling corruption.

Social media went crazy after the news of acquittal started pouring in. And it was the BJP’s turn to feel the heat.  Some even said it’s “fixed match” between Congress and BJP.
