Hyderabad Aims To Become 'Beggar-Free City', 300 Vagrants Sent To Rehab

The drive, which was initiated in November 2017, aims to provide rehabilitated beggars with an education and employment

In an attempt to turn Hyderabad into a ‘beggar-free city’, the Telangana Prisons Department rehabilitated 300 beggars and rescued 9000 from the streets. The drive, which was initiated in November 2017, aims to provide rehabilitated beggars with an education and employment.

“Different programs are organised for them including education program, we are also providing employment to the beggars who are able, or physically fit. It’s not a prison but is more like a rehabilitation centre,” IG Telangana A Narsimha, Prisons Department.

“After picking up beggars, if they want to go back to their residences, we will call their relatives and then counsel them and we will release them. The drive will continue in the city,” he added.

Narsimha says that they now plan on implementing the drive throughout the state of Telangana and maybe even the entire country further. Reportedly, the prisons DG have already approached the Telangana government to conduct the drive across the state.
