Self-styled godman and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is currently lodged in Sunaria Jail at Rohtak after being sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape of two sadhvis at his ashram. In the latest development, he has given a list to the authorities, mentioning the names of 10 visitors who could meet him in jail. Shockingly, the list does not include his wife Harjeet Kaur. Instead, his close aide and adopted daughter Honeypreet Insan features on the list. The Sirsa Police had received the list on September 4.
According to reports, other than Honeypreet Insan, the godman named his mother Nasib Kaur, son Jasmeet Insan, daughters Amarpreet and Charanpreet, daughter-in-law Husanpreet, his two sons-in-laws, Dera manager Vipassana and a loyalist Dana Singh.
The Sirsa Sadar police station SHO Dinesh Kumar visited the Dera premises to verify the identity of the potential visitors in the jail. Except for the Dera manager Vipasana, none of the family members were available for verification. According to jail norms, the prisoners are required to submit a list of people who would be regular visitors including family members. Besides this, no other person is allowed to meet the inmate. On August 28, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was given two consecutive sentences of 10 years each for two separate cases of rape, amounting to a total of 20 years in prison.
His sentencing came three days after he was convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula in the 15-year-old case, triggering widespread violence by his followers across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi/NCR. Around 38 people were killed and 290 were left injured.
