The Goods and Services Tax (GST), will come into effect from midnight. It will be launched at 12.00 am by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari, chief ministers of all states, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and MPs of both houses of Parliament.

According to an Indian Express report, the GST will be launched in the Parliament’s Central Hall. The tax regime, which was initiated by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, will replace the current indirect taxation system and unify the country’s $2 trillion economy into one single market.

Here’s how the ceremony will proceed:

10:55pm: President Mukherjee will reach Parliament

10:59pm: The President’s arrival will be formally announced by a marshall

11:00pm: The President will step into the Central Hall of Parliament where the event will take place

11:02pm: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will give a brief introduction of the GST

11:10pm: A short film on GST will be screened

11:15pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver his speech

11:45pm: President will speak

Midnight: The President will ring a gong and usher in GST

12:05am: The President leaves Parliament

Ahead of the GST rollout, the Indian Parliament was all decked up, like it is decorated before the Republic and Independence day.
