Gallantry award to be conferred upon 15 soldiers who carried out surgical strikes last year but no Ashok Chakra to be given this year. These awards are given to recognise the achievements of the soldiers that include Army, Navy, Air Force, territorial army and those working with or under the Armed forces.

Meanwhile, head of the 68th Republic Day, the government of India on January 25 released the list of Padma awardees that includes Paralympic Gold medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu and Gymnast Dipa Karmakar, Virat Kohli, Shekar Naik (Captain of Indian Blind Cricket Team) and Sakshi Malik.

Meanwhile, for the first time, around 10-12 ‘unsung heroes,’ who have done commendable work in various fields including ecology, sanitation, agriculture and similar fields are likely to figure in the awardees’ list. This has been done on the suggestion of the Prime Minister.

According to the reports, people were chosen from various professions and regions of the country from around 16,000 applications received. The list was than shunted down to 4,500 before the awardees were finalised.

On January 23, 2017 Prime Minister Narendra Modi awarded the National Bravery Awards to 25 children.Present their was Minister for Women and Child development, Maneka Gandhi.

The National Bravery Award scheme, started by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW), is for the children in the age group of 6-18 years who have shown immense courage and had set an example for other children. Under the scheme there are five categories of awards which are the Bharat Award, Sanjay Chopra Award, Geeta Chopra Award, Bapu Gaidhani Award and the General National Bravery Awards. The awardees get cash prize along with a medal and a certificate.
