Dismal state of healthcare in Karnataka hospital, women forced to share bed, babies in same incubator

A staff on the condition of anonymity told that before admitting the patients the hospital tells them about the lack of space

Due to less facilities and even lesser space, patients at Kalburgi District Government Hospital in Karnataka are forced to sleep on the floor. In the photos, that have appeared in the media on Thursday, women who have delivered babies, could be seen sharing beds or sleeping on the floor.

One of the hospital staff on the condition of anonymity told that before admitting the patients the hospital tells them about the lack of space . He added that the hospital also requested the Health Department to provide more beds and incubators, as the hospital only has 22 baby incubators. Some of the requests were sent more than an year ago but the hospital is still waiting for the reply.

“We inform the patients about the lack of space and suggest that they go to the private hospital. But there are so many families that cannot afford private healthcare and end up agreeing to share beds and sleeping on the floor on extra mattresses,” said the staff.
