Rajasthan Village Balances Sex Ratio One Sapling At A Time

They are protecting the environment and their girls

A village in Rajasthan has found a unique way of discouraging female foeticide.

Every time a girl is born, her family has to plant 111 saplings. But it doesn’t end there. Just like a girl is brought up, the family members have to also take proper care of the trees.

This is how Piplantri village in Rajasthan has increased the village’s green cover. But more importantly, it has ensured that every birth of a girl child is celebrated.

Villagers in Piplantri started this brand of ecofeminism in 2007 and since then, the results are evident.

India needs more such unique initiatives to protect the girl child.
