Amid uproar over Alwar lynching episode, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat pitches for all-India ban on cow slaughter

The RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said the work of cow protection should be continued by obeying the law

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has demanded a country wide ban on cow slaughter  adding that any violence in the name of cow protection defames the cause.”We want a law banning cow slaughter across the country,” he said at an event to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir in the national capital. The RSS chief said the work of cow protection should be continued by obeying the law.

“Any violence in the name of cow slaughter defames the cause and the law must be obeyed,” he said.

Bhagwat’s assertion came amid huge uproar over lynching of a 55 year old dairy farmer by a group of cow vigilantes in Rajasthan’s Alwar over suspicion that he was smuggling cows. So far Police has been able to arrest four suspects while 10 other are still at large. The incident that happened nearly tow years after Dadri lynching episode found echo in Parliament and Supreme Court.

The apex court rapped six state governments  over instances of violence in the name of cow protection and have sought a reply on the issue. The court acted on a petition by Congress leader Shehzad Poonawala who had alleged that cow vigilantism is on the rise in the country.
