Here's why Shashi Tharoor is in trouble over a tweet on Miss World Manushi Chhillar

When Indians across the globe were celebrating Manushi Chhillar being crowned as Miss World 2017, a tweet storm regarding her name was brewing and drawing ire of social media users. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor took a jibe at her name to much anger of Twitterati who were not impressed by his casual remarks. He tried to make a pun on her surname, Chhillar, equating it to the Hindi slang for ‘coinage’.

In the latest development on the matter, the National Commission of Women (NCW) would summon Tharoor for his ‘derogatory and degrading’ remark against the newly-crowned Miss World 2017.

Commenting on Tharoor’s remark on Manushi, NCW tweeted their condemnation. In a series of tweets, NCW said,

Tharoor’s seemingly witty tweet on Manushi Chhillar backfired when the Twitteratis slammed him for comparing her surname to ‘chillar’ (loose change). He had tweeted,

Afterwards, Tharoor shifted to damage control mode by issuing an apology. He tweeted,

Haryana Women and Child Development Minister Kavita Jain also slammed Tharoor and called his tweet an “indulging in callous and reckless ‘wordplay’ on Miss World Manushi Chhillar”.
