15 Muslim men in Madhya Pradesh have been charged with sedition for celebrating Pakistan's Champions Trophy victory over India

Days after Pakistan beat India in the ICC Champions Trophy cricket tournament 2017, at least 15 Muslim men have reportedly been arrested by the Madhya Pradesh police and allegedly charged with sedition for celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India. The men allegedly indulged in pro-Pakistan sloganeering and even burst crackers, distributed sweets to celebrate Pakistan’s win.

According to a report in Indian Express, the men who belong to an age group 20 and 35, celebrated in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh. The incident reportedly came to the light after the Hindu villager residing in the Muslim-dominated Mohad village registered a complaint against the men with the police.

“We received a complaint on the matter from one of the villagers and after a preliminary investigation, we found that the allegations were correct. We have subsequently booked the accused of sedition and criminal conspiracy under Sections 124A and 120B of IPC respectively,” a police official told the New Indian Express.

“The police would soon send a letter to the district magistrate with a request to stop government subsidies being enjoyed by the accused”, Indian Express quoted Investigating Officer Ramashray Yadav as saying.

Following India’s loss in the tournament, a number of disappointed and agitated Indians went on to burn posters of the cricketers and break their TV sets. High security was reportedly deployed outside former Indian skipper MS Dhoni’s residence.

Another man from Karnataka identified as Shabir Ahmed has also been charged with sedition for celebrating Pakistan’s Champions Trophy win over India. As per various media reports, Shabir allegedly burst crackers and raised “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans while celebrating Pakistan’s triumph in the Champions Trophy final.

As opposed to what a number of people had speculated, India faced a humiliating defeat and lost to Pakistan by 180-run in the finals. This was the first ever Champions Trophy title for Pakistan.
